Abstract

Cerium is one of rare Jarang earth that has a lot of uses and represents the main element in monazite, therefore
its separation and purifications from the other rare earth elements is important to produce pure cerium products.
In this research, cerium from monazite has been purified by solvent extraction and the supported liquid
membrane technique using dibutyldithiocarbamate and dibutyldithiophosphated as complexing reagents. The
sample studied was a crude of rare earth mixture (containing 69 % of cerium), extracted from monazite samples
collected from Bangka Island. The resulted data indicate that cerium could be purified better by extraction
technique using dibutyldithiocarbamate in petroleum ether, at pH 5.0. This was by decomposing cerium-
dibutyldithiocarbamated complex with nitric acid and extraction of the liberated ligand with toluene, to produce
pure ceriumin aqueous layer. The product was 50 gram of cerium powder with purity of almost 100 %, and a
recovery of 20.25%. Extraction of the element by the supported liquid membrane technique has been conducted
using the best conditions to result in the transport of cerium of 95 % using dibutyldithiocarbamate, and 93 %
using dibutyldithiophosphate.
